The Cradle to Careers Academy

TCTCA at HFH, Inc, is an early intervention program for young men ages 10-17 years old who exhibit high risk or at-risk behaviors. The program works with young people in West Philadelphia and South-West Philadelphia. "We believe youth who had men in their lives whom they could relate to and identify with, they would look at their education differently, and the probability of their success would increase exponentially".

(See 1. A exhibit below).

Educational Supports

HFH, provides education advocacy to individuals and families who want their voices heard. We take strategical approaches to address concerns with 504 Plans, Functional Behavior Assessments, I.E.P.'s, and psychological testing.

HFH, works on behalf of individuals, families, schools, and students to increase achievement and growth. Our staff are acting as liaisons to bridge communication and support to students and school. It's a 4-step process in how we render services. (See 1. B exhibit below).

Crisis Intervention

Our Crisis Intervention Program works to fight issues distressing communities including drugs, gun violence, and other social ills. Our mission is to use responsible adults from all walks of life who are homegrown to Philadelphia's most violent neighborhoods as change agents. The mission is to foster meaningful associations in these communities, steering those identified as being tangled in illegal behavior into alternative positive solutions. Team members work to advocate and mediate neighborhood quarrels and conflicts while also responding to area crisis.

HFH, has trained trauma informed specialists that aim to help youth relieve symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, and general anxiety among children exposed to trauma. Youth learn skills in relaxation, challenging upsetting thoughts, and social problem-solving, as well as processing traumatic memories and grief. Between sessions, children complete assignments and participate in activities that reinforce the skills they’ve learned. The session also includes parent and teacher education sessions. (See exhibit 1.C)

Community Engagement

HFH, approach is to help involve, activate, and offer methodological support to community participants and inhabitants around the respected properties within their communities. We will work with each neighborhood by serving to develop an action plan and resources for communities to support decisions to produce nonviolent and healthy surroundings for children and families.

8 Elements of The Career Readiness Process

Educational Supports

What a great tool for helping children identify social cues and emotions.

1.B

We conduct an initial meeting comprised of highlighting any biological, psychological and social issues impeding on academic performance.

We conduct home visits to gain more notional background about the student. More importantly, our intentions are to establish rapport.

We conduct an outcome review of what services were effective or ineffective. A collaboration with all members are recommended.

We conduct an on site observation with the student and family. There the parent will receive briefing about overall progress.

Social & Emotional Learning

Help For Higher, Inc. understands that the most important part of our work focuses on the social-emotional experiences of students. We have adapted our services to include a focus on social and emotional learning

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS)

 Bounce Back

Intervention for Elementary School Children Exposed to Stressful Events

Bounce Back is an intervention for elementary school children exposed to stressful and traumatic events developed by Dr. Audra Langley, PhD, from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and associates. The goal of the intervention program is to help teach students ways of coping with and recovering from traumatic experiences. It includes 10 skill-building group sessions for students, held at school. The intervention program is based on Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) which has been shown to help middle school students recover after stressful events. With parent consent, students are screened for eligibility. Children may be eligible if they endorse that they have been exposed to one or more traumatic events and have current post-traumatic symptoms. The initial evaluation in multi-cultural elementary schools shows that students participating in the program showed significant reductions in anxiety and post-traumatic stress symptoms compared to those who did not participate.
